SEOUL, Korea, March 21, 2017 – The Otis Gen2 Life elevator, which introduces faster speeds and new aesthetic designs, is now available for residential and commercial buildings in Korea. Based on the innovative flat-belt Gen2 elevator that has sold more than 500,000 units around the world, this enhanced Gen2 Life is the newest model, launched to meet the needs of Korean customers. Otis, the world’s leading manufacturer and maintainer of elevators, escalators, and moving walkways, is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The Otis Gen2 elevator replaced traditional steel ropes with polyurethane flat-belts for the first time in the industry, providing a smooth ride and allowing for a smaller, more efficient elevator machine.

Now, the Gen2 Life in Korea introduces the Ambiance design, a “glocal” design that combines a global model developed in collaboration with a prestigious design studio in Europe with Korean trends identified by the design center at the South Korea head office. Ambiance offers cab designs in Modern Silver, Black Wave, Natural Bronze and Natural White and materials, lighting, fixtures and other features can be mixed and matched to create approximately 20,000 design combinations. The Ambiance design and fixtures have been recognized for their unique excellence at the 2016 Good Design Award by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion in December of 2016. The Gen2 Life is available in Korea from Otis Elevator Korea Co. Ltd. (Otis Korea), the local Otis unit.

“An elevator is much more than a simple people-mover. It is a space where people spend precious moments of daily life,” IS Cho, vice president and managing director, Otis Korea, said. “Enhanced in design and performance, the Gen2 Life elevator offers a new experience to passengers, creating a space that people want to enjoy. I’m confident that the new Gen2 Life will build on the success story of Gen2 Dynamic.”

The Ambiance design minimizes the discomfort that some passengers may feel in an enclosed space and creates a comfortable atmosphere with the smart use of lighting. Soft LED lighting at corners and behind the indicator provides indirect light to give a sense of spaciousness. Moving light that travels in the same direction of the elevator and mood lights available in cool and warm white hues add a unique touch of personality to the cab.

The cab interior is designed to complement other features in the building. Wall and door designs include wood, waves and other patterns inspired by nature, as well as steel, marble and other modern materials.

For enhanced passenger experience, the Gen2 Life elevator includes an LCD display panel, which can be programed to provide weather and other useful information to passengers. Other aesthetic features include:

  • Indicators and button numbers lit with big, bright white LED lighting for improved visibility.
  • Air purification and pest control features
  • An anti-bacterial handrail
