UTC/Otis Disaster Relief & Safety Education Fund Launched in Beijing

BEIJING, May 12, 2016 — United Technologies and its subsidiary Otis Elevator (China) Co., Ltd. (“Otis China”) have launched the UTC/Otis Disaster Relief & Safety Education Fund to support firefighters affected by the tragic Tianjin Economic Development Area explosions of August 12, 2015. Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

With a budget of RMB 2 million for the coming three years, the fund will assist firefighters and their families and deliver safety education programs to help prepare for future disaster situations.

The fund will be managed by the China Women’s Development Foundation (CWDF). CWDF will distribute financial and material aid, including support services, to affected people. It will also organize and promote safety education through online and offline activities. United Technologies and its subsidiaries in China will work with CWDF to meet relief targets and allocate funds where they will do the most good.

Employee volunteers from United Technologies and its subsidiaries in China, including UTC Aerospace Systems, will also help CWDF establish a nationwide volunteer network to provide safety training at the community level.

Tony Black, president, Otis Elevator (China) Investment Co., Ltd and Qin Guoying, deputy director-general and secretary general of CWDF, announced the new fund at a ceremony in Beijing today.

“With a long-term commitment to China, Otis fulfills its social responsibilities through activities with a focus on education, such as our safe-riding programs for school children,” Black said. “As we look to the future, we want to establish a long-term disaster response and safety education platform that will unite employees of United Technologies, its subsidiaries in China and our business and non-profit partners, and let us contribute to a safer China for all.”

“As a subsidiary of one of the first foreign companies to enter China, Otis China has made Tianjin its base for over 30 years. We are committed to supporting the community in times of need,” Black added. “We will use our technical knowhow and our experience providing educational elevator safety programs over many years to help CWDF deliver effective safety education that help reduce the harm caused by disasters.”
