On Oct. 28, United Technologies brought its acclaimed Green Shoots program to HongMei Primary School, a privately-run school for children of immigrant workers in the outskirts of Shanghai. This event, led by CCS Asia, saw active participation of more than 60 employees from both CCS Asia and Carrier China, and 300 second grade students. Volunteers helped the school enchance the infrastrcuture, engaged in interactive classes with children, and spread joy and happiness at the school carnival.
CCS Asia Pacific President Gaurang Pandya accepted a banner from the School's principal in recognition of the Green Shoot program and spoke on UTC’s commitment to giving back to communities. Leadership from CCS Asia and China presented the Green Shoots award to students with excellent performance.
“At United Technologies, we are committed to making the world a better place to live. The Green Shoots program is just one way that we give back to the communities in which we operate.” said Gaurang. “Many of you have volunteered at Green Shoots programs and in other Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs outside the Company. Thank you for your efforts; I encourage you to explore further opportunities to contribute.”
In addition to enhancing facilities on-site, an essential part of Green Shoots is fostering students’ awareness of and knowledge in science and sustainibility. Volunteers set up a botanical garden and green seedlings with students and conducted six interative classes on health, environmental conservation, and science.
Without UTC’s employee volunteers, Green Shoots’ success would not have been possible. “It is my first time volunteering and I’ve found it touching and memorable,” said Vicky Huang, Finance, CCS Asia Pacific. “You can see the children’s happiness in their laughter and smiles and I’m proud to have contributed.”
