Next Gen Inventors Wow Global Audience

Reaching young, diverse students with invention education is core component of UTC’s STEM Investment Strategy.

Poise, passion, creativity and a seven-step invention process propelled 500+ student inventors ahead of their peers to compete in the 4th annual National Invention Convention, presented by United Technologies. These qualifying students pitched their projects to UTC judges, and others, surrounded by some of America’s most famous inventions in the main hall of The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

“I came to the event because I wanted to give back,” said Tammy Dahlstrom, senior account manager at Pratt & Whitney Canada. “It’s a fantastic opportunity. I love seeing all the innovation and creativity.” UTC employees volunteered as judges, on-site and virtually, evaluating student inventors on the originality and potential impact of their ideas.

In the end, four students left the convention with UTC awards, including Vikram Anantha, a 7th grader from Massachusetts who won the UTC Most Innovative Award for his Automated Communication Companion, a device that teaches kids with non-verbal autism new words.

 “The Invention Convention inspires and nurtures the next generation of scientists and engineers that will build the future,” said Jason Chua, Executive Director of United Technologies Advanced Projects and keynote speaker at the event. “We need more brilliant young minds like Vikram to become the innovators of tomorrow and find solutions to our world’s greatest challenges.”
