Otis has been awarded a contract to supply and install 108 Gen2® elevators in stations along downtown Singapore’s new mass rapid transit line
The fully underground Downtown Line will extend 40 kilometers and include 33 stations. This line will facilitate direct travel from the northwestern and eastern areas of the island to the Central Business District. In addition, the Downtown Line will provide a strategic transportation link to support the development of Singapore’s Marina Bay area.
“The Singapore Land Transport Authority is a highly sophisticated customer who wanted the latest proven technology and the most environmentally friendly elevator system,” said Ryan Mai, managing director, Otis Singapore and area director, Southeast Asia. “We are delighted that their team of experts selected our Gen2 elevator system for this important project.”
Gen2 elevators will be installed at each station to facilitate commuter access. Unlike conventional systems, the compact design of Gen2 system does not require a machine room thereby saving space and delivering design flexibility. The Gen2 system also reduces energy usage by up to 50 percent when compared to conventional systems and is cleaner for the environment since its flat, polyurethane-coated steel belts and permanent magnet gearless machine do not require additional lubrication.
Singapore Land Transport Authority anticipates a daily ridership of approximately 500,000 people when the new line is in full operation. Construction of the Downtown Line will take place in three phases and is targeted for completion in 2016.
