Pratt & Whitney PSD, an aircraft engine combustor case repair facility in Springdale, Arkansas, has been named 2014 Corporate Recycler of the Year by the Arkansas Recycling Coalition. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. company (NYSE: UTX).
The award honors a corporation that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of waste reduction, recycling and sustainability. The Pollution Prevention Team at Pratt & Whitney PSD has reduced industrial process waste by 73 percent since 2011 by reverting waste streams. Waste, such as office paper and scrap metal, is sent back to the creator of the product and reused in the final product that the business unit purchases. The facility's efforts are part of a larger company-wide initiative at Pratt & Whitney to recycle 100 percent of its materials and eliminate industrial process waste as part of the company's aggressive goals to improve the sustainability of its factories, suppliers and products by 2025.
"The strong commitment at our Arkansas facility to reducing our environmental impact is remarkable," said Matthew Bromberg, president, Pratt & Whitney Aftermarket. "Industrywide, only a small fraction of aircraft engine material worldwide is recycled and returned for use. However, leaders like Pratt & Whitney PSD are making huge inroads to improve the amount of material that is recycled instead of discarded. We are proud of their contributions towards reducing Pratt & Whitney's overall environmental footprint."
"The Pollution Prevention initiative is truly a team effort within our facility," said Mike Finan, general manager, Pratt & Whitney PSD. "All of our employees are engaged and feel a strong sense of ownership in the goal to reduce our impact on the environment, and this award is a testament to that culture."
