PUTEAUX, France, November 6, 2018— Today Otis France inaugurated its new building, expanding its presence at its facilities in Gien (Loiret 45, France). Otis, the world’s leading manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, such as elevators, escalators and moving is a unit of United Technologies (NYSE: UTX).
Otis has invested in a new 2,000-sq.-m. Building, which will house its industrial departments at its Gien site. The new building reflects Otis’ deep knowledge and capabilities, while at the same time showcasing French-style know-how and excellence. The new building frees additional space for the extension of the onsite Gien Research & Development department. The workforce, consisting of technicians and engineers involved in Research and Development, is anticipated to reach 130 people.
Patrick Blethon, President Otis Europe, Middle East and Africa, and His Honor Fabrice Bouleau, Mayor of Gien, attended this important event for Otis France.
“We are proud of this new building,” Blethon told the audience at the event. “Through investments like this, Otis continues to demonstrate its innovation leadership. Otis has chosen to invest in France and make its Gien site a center of excellence in innovation and R&D, as well as supply chain and logistics.”
A major event in the history of the Gien site
This is the largest extension of the Otis Gien site since 1961, when Otis acquired the Ascinter plant. Since then, Otis’ industrial history in Gien has developed hand in hand with increases in volume and transfers of production and R&D activities.
The site is being extended to handle growth in volume and continued investment in Research & Development. Gien has always shown a willingness to be at the forefront of innovation as well as industrial and technological challenges.
“We produced 12,500 elevators and 180,000 doors at Gien in 2017 for all of Europe, and we have more than 700 employees including those at the European R&D Center,” said Anne-Lise Grosmougin, director of Otis’ New Products and Modernization Center in Gien, “The Gien industrial site has always participated actively in the company’s product innovation – one notable example being the world premiere of the high-energy-efficiency Gen2® elevator a few years ago, and more recently with its development of the first hydrogen-elevator prototype.”
