Sealed-bearing, governor rope technology make service cleaner, more environmentally sustainable

TOKYO, April 6, 2017 – Technological advances in elevator roller guide and governor rope technology mean the Gen2® Premier elevator, now available in Japan, does not need lubrication as part of regular maintenance over the course of its lifetime. Otis, the world’s leading manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, including elevators, escalators and moving walkways, is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Otis revolutionized the industry with its Gen2® elevator, which replaces traditional ropes with flat belts, allowing for a more compact and energy-efficient machine. The Gen2® machine design also incorporates permanently sealed bearings that require no additional lubrication over the course of the elevator’s life.

That same sealed-bearing technology has now also been incorporated into the compact roller guides for the Gen2® Premier elevator in Japan, and the Gen2® Premier’s governor rope is made of a high-performance material that is lubrication-free, making the elevator more durable and environmentally sustainable. The first such elevator in Japan was recently delivered to the Nippon Institute of Technology (Saitama Prefecture) Club Wing by Nippon Otis Elevator Company (“Nippon Otis”), the local Otis entity.

“The lubricant-free compact roller guide and governor rope will become standard equipment in the Gen2® Premier elevator in Japan to provide customers with mobility in an elevator that is more sustainable and provides a smoother, more comfortable ride,” said Hiroshi Yamagami, representative director of Nippon Otis.

Features of the added lubricant-free Gen2® Premier elevator

  1. Flat belts for compact design, energy efficiency and longer service life Conventional wire ropes contain oil in their core. The Otis Gen2®flat belt design delivers longer service life, and the machine requires no lubrication as part of maintenance.
  2. A more comfortable ride with sealed-bearing compact roller guides The compact roller guides installed in the Gen2®Premier contain sealed bearings so they require no added oil, which makes for smoother movement, less vibration and a more comfortable ride.
  3. High-performance HDPE governor rope Conventional governor ropes contain oil, but Otis's newly developed high-density polyethylene governor rope requires no oil in the core. In addition to being more environmentally-sustainable, this rope is longer-lasting because it experiences less wear and stretching.
