SHANGHAI, July 6, 2016 — The first Otis Technical Training Center in China, located in Xiangtan, Hunan province, recently opened. The training center aims to develop high-quality, professional service mechanics to meet growing demand in the China elevator market. It marks the launch of the Otis Technical Training Center Program in China. Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
The Otis Technical Training Center in Xiangtan is a collaboration between Otis Elevator Management (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. (“Otis China”), a local Otis entity, and the Hunan Electrical College of Technology. Otis China plans to establish similar training centers in Hangzhou, Tianjin, Chengdu and Zhengzhou. The goal is to train about 4,000 new students and current mechanics each year by working closely with more than 20 institutions and academies.
“The Otis Technical Training Center is part of Otis’ focus on expanding service infrastructure in China to better serve our customers and raise service standards in the elevator industry as a whole,” said Perry Zheng, president, Otis China. “There is nothing more important to Otis than safety. This specialized program will allow us to train more professional mechanics to keep up with demand. We are also setting an industry benchmark which we hope will help enhance elevator and escalator service quality in China,” Zheng added.
Targeted at college graduates, the center will offer a three-year program in collaboration with local technical institutions. Training facilities are equipped with Otis elevators and escalators on site to provide hands-on training for new mechanics and current Otis mechanics who will receive advanced skills and knowledge. The course also includes an internship that provides on-the-job exposure for students at an Otis service depot and allows students to undertake real-world maintenance work under the supervision of experienced Otis mechanics. Program graduates will be qualified by the center to obtain accreditation by the authorities and Otis, which has a mechanic certification system based on training level.
As part of its service digitalization strategy, Otis has launched the Otis Eagle Service, which equips mechanics with mobile phones to enhance work efficiency and service response. Otis has also launched specialized services for key segments, such as the Otis High-rise Maintenance Management System designed for China’s tall buildings, and the Otis Metro Maintenance Management System which provides around-the-clock service for metro rail customers.
Otis is also working with leading IT enterprises, such as Microsoft and AT&T, to develop digital tools that will help maintenance engineers and managers further improve the quality and efficiency of maintenance services.
