TIANJIN, China, March 9, 2016 – Otis Elevator China Company Ltd (“Otis China”) has been selected to provide 98 Otis elevators for the new passenger terminal, rail transport and highway facilities at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. The project represents another infrastructure milestone for Otis China following the Tianjin Metro and Chengdu Metro major projects it secured last year. Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
As one of the key air transport hubs in China, Baiyun International Airport serves as a gateway to south China. With an area of 623,000 square meters, the new Terminal 2 is expected to come into operation in early 2018 with a capacity to handle up to 45 million passengers a year by 2020. Initial investment is about RMB 18.9 billion. In addition to the passenger terminal, the project includes an underground Ground Traffic Center (GTC) connecting three railway lines, two metro rail lines and one expressway.
Otis China will supply 98 energy-efficient Gen2® elevators for Terminal 2 and the GTC. The Gen2 elevator system revolutionized the elevator industry by replacing the conventional traction steel rope with a flexible polyurethane-coated steel belt which is stronger and up to three times more durable than conventional steel cables. The Gen2 system also uses the sustainable Otis ReGen™ drive. Gen2 elevators combined with a ReGen drive can reduce the elevator’s energy consumption by up to 75 percent compared to conventional systems with non-regenerative drives.
“As the inventor of the safety elevator and the modern industry’s innovation leader, Otis is dedicated to offering elevator solutions that improve safety and efficiency,” said Tony Black, president, Otis Elevator (China) Investment Co., Ltd. “We are honored that the reliable, energy-efficient Otis Gen2 elevators are supporting the expansion of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport into another key regional air transport hub in the Asia-Pacific region.”
