The EH&S Innovation Award recognizes the location or region that has applied the greatest innovation to resolving an environmental challenge. Winning projects may highlight individual achievements or those developed in partnership with a non-UTC entity, including contractors or non-governmental organizations.
Pratt & Whitney's East Hartford and Middletown sites are awarded the 2013 Innovation Award for their work in collecting and securely shredding over 380,000 pounds of facility white paper, and for the closed-looping of that material as feedstock for paper towels returned to the site. In addition to keeping the the paper waste from being shipped to a landfill or incinerator, the P&W process allowed the paper vendor to eliminate 861,000 kWh of electricity and 1.5 million gallons of water that would have been required to produce non-recycled products.
Our 2013 award winner demonstrates that environmental stewardship does not automatically come at additional cost, and in fact typically contributes to our financial bottom line.
