UTC's EH&S awards recognize individual facility or multiple site collaborative achievement, and the 2013 Ergonomic Award winners clealy demonstrated the value of collaboration. Their winning solutions were financially viable and resulted in a clear reduction in ergonomic risk at both locations.
Prestwick and Chula Vista collaborated on efforts directed at reducing ergonomic and laceration risks at Prestwick. The project team leveraged the learning at each site, which resulted in a 58% reduction in safety incident rate and 75 % reduction in Lost Time Incident Rate at Chula Vista.
Best practices from Chula Vista were shared with Prestwick, where a dedicated ergonomic team, along with the support of lead mechanics and business unit leaders, collaborated to implement them. These best practices improved the ergonomics byreduced the ergonomic risk for employees by facilitating the transfer of large parts and inventing devices to adjust product position,as well as remove laceration risk and pinch points.
