Energy Management Guidebook

A systemic approach to formulating and implementing an effective energy management plan

In January 2011, United Technologies opened the doors of its Hamilton Sundstrand plant in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, to more than 30 peer companies and suppliers to explain what works – and how – in cutting energy costs and consumption.

Representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy addressed the group and cited United Technologies as an energy efficiency leader. Executives from Carrier, Pratt & Whitney, Hamilton Sundstrand and Sikorsky all shared success stories on energy efficiency and sustainability.

In addition to touring the Hamilton Sundstrand plant, the more than 85 attendees received the Supplier Energy Management Guidebook – an industry first, which shares UTC best practices.

“Rising energy costs and global environmental concerns affect our business every day,” said Sean West, Manager, Environmental, Health & Safety. “Our response is to develop ever cleaner and more efficient solutions both for ourselves and for our customers. The Guidebook provides a systematic approach to formulating and implementing an effective energy management plan.”

In addition to offering standard work processes developed by UTC facilities managers, the Guidebook presents standard practices adopted from the ANSI MSE 2005 Standard for Energy Management.

In 2009, United Technologies joined the U.S. Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now initiative. Over the past 20 years UTC has cut its energy use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions at its global facilities.
